Doc Is HiM (Healing iN Music)

Doc T Elliott

Bio

Dr. Terence “Doc T” Elliott is an Emeritus Professor of Black Studies and Music whose life’s work centers on uplifting communities through education, cultural empowerment, and sound-based healing practices. With a career spanning over three decades, Dr. Elliott is widely respected for his unique ability to bridge academia, art, and community wellness, inspiring transformational learning and collective healing.

Holding a Doctorate in Educational Leadership, an M.A. in Creative Arts Interdisciplinary Studies, and a B.A. in Music and Black Studies, Dr. Elliott’s scholarship and professional practice reflect a deep commitment to culturally responsive education. He has long championed service-learning as a cornerstone for student growth, cultivating partnerships with community agencies, colleges, and global institutions to create experiential learning opportunities that enrich teaching, learning, and civic engagement.

Throughout his distinguished academic career, Dr. Elliott served in multiple leadership roles—including Division Dean of Natural, Social, and Applied Sciences at Contra Costa College and Senior Dean of Instruction at Los Medanos College. He also served as a tenured professor at Diablo Valley College, where he taught widely celebrated courses such as The History of Hip-Hop Music and Culture, Introduction to Humanities, and Introduction to Social Justice. His curriculum development, mentorship, and community-building initiatives have shaped generations of students, educators, and cultural activists.

As a long-standing board member of A2MEND (African American Male Education Network and Development), Dr. Elliott has helped guide statewide efforts to improve educational outcomes for African American male students, advocating for equity, leadership development, and institutional accountability across California’s community colleges.

Dr. Elliott is also an accomplished author. His works include:

  • Spirit, Rhythm, and Story: Community Building and Healing through Song
  • Hip-Hop Music: History and Culture — the first e-textbook on Hip-Hop used in California community colleges.
  • The Healing Power of Sound for the Black Community (forthcoming 2026) examines sound and vibration as tools for restoring wellness, memory, and cultural identity in Black communities.

Today, widely known as Doc T, he brings his scholarship full circle as a certified sound therapist and Kemetic Reiki practitioner, offering transformational wellness experiences throughout the community. His sound therapy sessions integrate mindfulness, meditation, Qigong, and a variety of healing instruments—including crystal bowls, Himalayan bowls, didgeridoo, gongs, ocean drums, rattles, flutes, and chimes—to help individuals and groups relieve stress, release emotional blockages, and realign the body, mind, and spirit. With each session, Doc T creates a sacred space where participants can slow down, breathe deeply, reconnect with themselves, and experience the ancient power of vibration-based healing.

A visionary educator, cultural scholar, musician, and healer, Dr. Terence “Doc T” Elliott continues to inspire communities through his mission: to heal, teach, and empower through sound, culture, and collective liberation.

Purpose Statement

My name is Terence Todd Elliott, (but I have gone by many other names throughout my life—Terry, Tee, Uncle, Dad, Mr. Elliott, The Professor, Dr. Elliott, T Elliott, Nana Kweku, Uncle Baba, Pop Pop, and now Doc T), I am committed to learning and developing myself to be the best I can be. I stand for love by sharing knowledge and modeling my healing for others. My values reflect my upbringing, on family, community, and a connectedness to my African culture and ancestors.

My earliest memory of being touched by the creative spirit was when I was nine or ten; my parents bought me a mini keyboard that had letters and numbers on the keys. This made it easy to read music that also had the numbers written down. I began learning how to play familiar songs and creating my own through this process. The piano and music in general have always seemed to call me, and I have been drawn to it, if I can remember. Even though neither of my parents nor my brother pursued music or showed musical inclinations.

Music has been my voice, even when I did not like to talk much. From elementary school to high school, I was more of an introvert, but I was still somewhat popular. I never was that interested in studying music or even playing like someone else. I enjoyed being creative and finding my songs for inner expression. One of my deepest wounds was my father having dementia/Alzheimer’s disease, and me not being able to help him overcome it. That is when, in 2007, I first began learning how Music Therapy can help with this disease, and more importantly, I came across the concept of Sound Healing and the progress it was having on dementia patients. My arrival at Sound Healing was too late to have a significant effect on my father. However, it has changed the direction of my life. It made my purpose with music clearer. I have been a performing musician and a music educator for most of my life. Now, my true calling/purpose is to be a Music Healer.

On the path toward learning and becoming a Sound/Music Healer, I was told and realized that first I had to deal with my issues and health challenges before I could help others, with the significant problems I have with my mood swings, anxieties, but mainly my anger outbursts. I spent and still spend many hours controlling my angry responses to things out of my control. Meditating and toning through humming is a tremendous practice for calming and gaining control back.

As a Sound/Music Healer, I aim to introduce the urban community to the benefits of Sound/Music Healing. I will hold workshops, talks/discussions on the physical and mental health benefits of using music and sound frequencies correctly, as well as provide Sound Treatments, Sound Baths, and Live-Music Healing Sessions featuring other musicians, including piano, vocals, bass, horns, and drums.
